Track laying and ballasting with photos

I need a bit of guidance and advice regarding long term track laying and ballasting. I built a ground level SM32 track around the garden four years ago and since then, I've had many attempts at ballasting, non of which have stood the test of time (and inclement weather). These have included scale ballast from Swift Sixteen - secured …

Railway ballast material selection and evaluation: A review

Ballast is generally defined as a volume of graded crushed rocks, however many other materials have been used or developed to serve as ballast [1].It is typically laid in a compacted layer, generally 250–350 mm thick, as shown in Fig. 1.It has the following functions [1], [2], [3]:. Resistance to the sleepers against vertical, longitudinal and lateral …

Scenic Cement vs Diluted White Glue?

White Glue dries 'rock hard' and the ballast/scenery that is glued down with it transmits noise. Matte Medium dries to a 'rubber' consistency and does not promote the transmission of noise. So far I have 4 bottles of Matte Medium and 5 bottles of Scenic Cement used up for all of my ballasting, and about 1/3 of the scenery on my layout.

Use of steel slag as railway ballast: A review

The higher dead weight of track can lead to the requirement of heavier sections in case of railway bridges. Further, the transportation costs of heavier steel slag can be slighter higher when compared to granite. However, the use of steel slag can lead to a reduction in the cost of ballast by about 25.3% [50].

Stabilization of Railway Tracks Using Geosynthetics—A Review

The layer of ballast between subgrade and ballast is called 'subballast'. Generally, sand gravel mixtures or crushed stone aggregates or slag forms the subballast material. It offers the following advantages towards maintaining track stability: 1. It prevents the penetration of ballast stones into the subgrade. 2.

LEGO IDEAS

Track ballast is the rock under the train tracks. This ballast is there to prevent the track from moving when a very heavy train runs over it. It also protects the track from anything that can prevent the safe operation of the trains. Most of the time, track ballast is made out of crushed rock. But, this sometimes needs to be replaced.

CMQ. October 6, 2017 – The traditional three-part recipe for a railroad – rock, creosote-soaked hardwood ties, and ribbons of steel rail – has remained essentially unchanged since the first iron horse was put to work. Just brain storming and idea, but if you were to put larger ballast down first (say 3/8") then the smaller rock (1/4" or smaller on top), would the smaller rock stay put better or still wash away?
