Toolpost instructions (lathe) If you have a shop vac handy, rig it up so the hose is positioned to draw air through the lathe spindle and into the shop vac. You will be surprised how much of the "grit" created by grinding will be sucked into the spindle and away from the ways of the lathe.

Sep 6, 2016. #7. Finished the hold-down and the dresser today to give it a try on the lathe. Used a piece of 5/8-18 fine threaded rod for the post and a 1-1/8" nut for hold down. The dresser is made from aluminium sized to accommodate a 1/2" shaft single point diamond dresser. Grinder mounted on the compound slide.

A co-worker of mine used the wrong RPM for a 3" dia wheel on a DuMore toolpost grinder. The grinder pulley arrangement was setup to the max RPM.He spent the day in the ER getting the chunks of the wheel removed from his left shoulder. Be careful with whatever you use. Used toolpost grinders are pretty cheap.

Grinding all the way down from .880" to .876" is just a waste of grinding time and media. On a lathe, the typical way to achieve this is to have the grinder mounted on the compound, with the compound set at 84° or 6°, depending on how your compound is marked - nearly parallel with the axis of the lathe.

With cylindrical grinding coolant is almost a must. Buy a cylindrical grinder if you need to do cylindrical grinding. One is on my wish list. I have a surface grinder, and it will not meet my needs for cylindrical grinding, hence a real one is on my wish list. I guess in a super pinch situation, a toolpost grinder could be helpful.

But of course I don't have a toolpost grinder yet, so I'll have to settle for a commercially-available collet holder. C20-ER20-150L straight-shank collet holder . The spindle will also need some bearings. Ideally, the best bearings to use for a high-speed spindle are angular contact ball bearings.

I still haven't finished my grinder build (it's on my ever longer list of partially completed projects) but even if I finish it tomorrow, I don't expect I'll be replacing any of those in my lifetime. I mostly expect to use the toolpost grinder for various morse, jacobs, and other taper tooling that I have vague plans to make.

I don't expect the cutting forces on a toolpost grinder to be too significant (it's not intended to hog off a lot of metal), so I'm designing around a cheap 24V DC motor (like this one) with a salvaged 24V computer power supply. Mine will also be belt driven. I plan to leverage a removable high speed spindle from my Gorton pantograph engraver.
