Well the amount of stress any part will take is proportional to the condition of the part. If you have a tranny that has been hammered on for 35 years it is going to be weaker than it was new. The case will stretch, the bore for the countershaft can be a little worn, the springs in the synchros weakened, bearings loose and about to fail.

Stronger. You're both right, the lower angle helix on the gears causes the whine. The gears aren't stronger, the overall tranny is. The more surface area the gears mesh on, the stronger they are. A high helix gear is stronger, BUT straighter cut gears put less thrust load on the trans case, so the tranny doesn't undergo as much flex.

Using an M22Z with a 3.08:1 is like having an OD with a 4.10:1 AND you still have the takeoff feel of an M22 and a 4.10:1 combination. The M22Z and the 3.08:1 combination is not the answer for everyone but, it is another option. See more.
