Silky, Fibrous, and Acicular Minerals. Silky minerals appear to have a parallel arrangement of fine fibers, sometimes giving them the luster of silk. Satin spar, in the photo on the left below, is a variety of gypsum (CaSO 4 •2H 2 O). It gets its name from its fibrous appearance and silky sheen.

The fibrous character is so well developed that a sillimanite variety is called fibrolite, which resembles a group of fibers twisted together.

Amphibole Mineral Family Five types of asbestos belong to the amphibole family. These varieties have sharp, straight chain-like structures that are easily inhaled.

This is incredibly rare with natural minerals, the only other one known to do so is fibrous selenite. Selenite, however, does not transmit nearly as clear of an image.

The properties of asbestos have been exploited for various applications – mainly for textile manufacturing – ever since ancient times, with the earliest known use dating back to 4000 B.C. Fibers are very flexible ...
