Posted February 20, 2018. The rule of thumb is ~1kW into the motor for every horsepower that comes out of it so your 1.5kW would probably be closer to 1.5hp, maybe a bit more on a good day. More would be nice to have, but 1.5kW will make a lot of knives if the extra money just isn't there. -Brian.

I'm currently gathering parts to assemble the no-weld grinder/sander, and hope to have operating in the next 4-6 weeks (time permitting). FYI, the 'master materials list' doesn't cover the flat platen tool, and in 1 or 2 of the diagrams the tool arms are showing different tube sizes (1 3/4" vs 1 1/2"), which was the source of some confusion.

Not only the right belts are important for the material, but the right speed is also just as important to avoid burning the material instead of grinding it. These are some guidelines that I found and use: Stainless steel, HSS - 20-30m/s. Carbon steel - 30 - 40m/s. Aluminium & soft metals - 20 - 30 m/s. Wood - 15 - 30m/s.

I built a grinder using BossDog's no weld grinder plans. It's served me very well so far. Doesn't have a VFD just a four step pulley but with the link belt it's very easy to change speeds. Just move the belt over. Nothing has to be loosened to do that. I'm saving my pennies for a new grinder but until then this one gets the job done.

I personally like the simplicity of the No Weld, but the alterability of the Grinder In a Box, the KMG kinda scares me a bit with all the drilling and tapping. Re: No Weld Belt Grinder Build. I saw in the new Grizzly catalog some slotted drive shafting in various sizes. I also have a set of plans from Michael Clerc for a "no weld" belt grinder. It looks much nicer than the original "no weld" grinder plans. Idler wheels, may be able to use a set of poly casters that you can grease from Grizzly also.

The .dwg are just about done for the belt grinder and I designed it so really only a couple of tools need precise maching. Ill post them just for review and some ideas from you guys but I think youll enjoy it. I didnt include motor though because the options there remain immense. The KMG chasis only is 549.00.
